The incident followed a flurry of technicals after a flagrant foul by Shaquille O'Neal that sent Karl Malone to the floor at the 8:51 mark of the third quarter and the Jazz ahead 60-51. While Malone, called for a technical for arguing with O'Neal, was arguing with the Lakers' big man, Horry threw a punch that appeared to strike Hornacek in the chest, sending the Utah guard's neck snapping back. Hornacek was not injured and continued to play, but Horry, with three points, was ejected. |

"Robert Horry played a great game tonight in a lot of different ways," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. The versatile 6-foot-10 forward had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. When overtime started, it was Horry who sank a 15-foot baseline jumper to give the Lakers the lead they would never relinquish. Moments later, when O'Neal missed a short hook, Horry was there to grab the offensive rebound and slam it through. It all compensated for his ugly turnover in the final 17 seconds of regulation when the Lakers could have put the game away. "When it went out of bounds, I thought: 'All right, we'll just have to win it in overtime,'" said Horry, who has two championship rings from 1994 and 1995 with the Houston Rockets. "It's disappointing when you turn the ball over because it was the last five seconds of the (regulation) game. But it's no big deal. You turn it over and then you have to let it go." And once O'Neal fouled out in overtime, they went into open floor mode and Bryant and Horry were at the hub of what was happening. "I thought we were still OK," Horry said. "We lost him at a very important time. But we can come out and do penetration things and get easy jumpers without Shaq in the game. Sometimes, people think we rely on him so much that we can't win without him." The Lakers did win, 120-118 in this Game 4 of the Finals against Indiana. |

| 5/4/02 |
The crowd was silent as Robert Horry hopped around the court after his series-clinching three-pointer Sunday in Portland. Shaquille O'Neal was the first Laker to greet Horry, wrapping him up and squeezing him like a rag doll. The other Lakers hugged him, some even whispering things in his ear that made Horry smile. In the middle of all this, Horry kept looking for Kobe Bryant. When Horry and Bryant found each other, they smiled, laughed and hugged, and then Horry thanked his young teammate for making the pass that made him the hero. Brian Shaw looked at both of them, his teammates and friends enjoying this special moment together, and thought about the gesture Horry extended to Bryant and how Bryant's face beamed. "Robert said to Kobe, 'Thanks for trusting me,' " said Shaw. "That was big. He was just happy that Kobe thought enough of him to let him take that game-winning shot." At halftime, Horry had approached Bryant as they were walking back onto the court to apologize for missing two shots after Bryant had passed him the ball. " 'Yo, I missed two jumpers for you, but next time, I'll knock it down for you,' " Horry told Bryant. With 2.1 seconds left, Horry made good on his promise after Bryant, double-teamed as he drove for the basket, found Horry wide open in the corner right in front of the Trail Blazers bench. Then, as teammates wanted to congratulate him, Horry just wanted to thank Bryant. "I just wanted to let him know that I appreciated him for believing in me and giving me the rock, 'cause he could have taken the shot," Horry said. "That made me feel good to hear Robert say that," Bryant said. "That's what it's all about, having that trust. Once you have that trust, you have that bond. Your teammates feel like you trust them. I trust them completely -- all of them." |

Robert Horry, generally one of the Lakers' most mild-mannered individuals, has been fined $10,000 for one decidedly ill-mannered gesture. Horry shoved a TNT cameraman as he walked off the Target Center court at halftime of Tuesday's Game2 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Horry called it self- defense, he thought the cameraman was about to back into him but the act was seen by a national television audience, and the NBA treated it harshly. "I ain't saying nothing about it," Horry said of the fine. "What do I need to say about it? Of course I'm going to appeal it unless they're going to give it to charity or something, give it to the victims of this crazy war."
Although Horry wasn't in a mood to defend his actions, coach Phil Jackson did. "I think they should leave cameramen off the floor. They've got long-range lenses that they can reach the pitchers all the time on the sideline," said Jackson, who viewed a replay of the run-in. "Rob, in his defense, was overrun by the guy who runs out there with the cable, and then that irritated him,' Jackson said. "And then the cameraman, in his direct path, he kind of moved him over. The guy didn't fall down. But I didn't see the shove. I'm glad the NBA protects the camera people on the court." |
